how to price your photography | miranda l. sober photography

To all of my photographer friends out there, are you in search of how to price your photography? I have the most amazing business tool to share with you! I do not lie when I tell you that this workbook has significantly changed my photography business for the better. I'm sure you have heard that multiple times from multiple others, telling you that if you do not do this, all around your business will fail (I fall for that every time). But honestly, let me tell you why this is for you.. Like many other photographers within the industry, I went through the constant struggle of pricing. I cannot tell you enough how often I would look to other photographer's I admired to see what they were charging, and would ask myself if I was 'good enough' to charge something similar. I would compare, compare, and compare. Do you know how stressful and unhealthy this is? Ha, talk about pulling my hair out. Maybe you are in the same boat now?

Speaking of pulling my hair out, I also cannot tell you how frustrating it is as a professional photographer to see where our industry is headed. It is frustrating to see another local photographer not pricing their work accordingly. Such as the 'I'll photograph whatever, whoever, whenever and you get everything you want for $100' photographer. Can I ask, where is the value? I do not mean this to be offensive in any way to anyone! Because I have too, been there and done that. If I had realized that by providing low pricing, I was implying low quality, I would have searched for this answer long ago.

If you a photographer, wishing to run a successful business and share your quality work, you must know that you are worth more. If you are taking time away from your family to spend time photographing someone else's family, isn't that time worth something?

YOU are valuable. YOUR TIME is valuable. YOUR WORK is valuable.

I finally chose to believe just that, and decided if I was going to run a successful, valuable business with a custom experience, I needed to reflect that within my pricing (heart attack). I have lost clients, but I have also gained clients. I've lost sleep over the loss of clients, because let me tell you, I am a people pleaser. But I have realized I cannot be the photographer for everyone, and that is okay. I can also tell you, that in the long run, I feel valued, and I know that I have something to offer that is valuable.

So you ask, how do I know what to charge for a simple 4x6 print? What do I charge that allows me to be profitable? What is that 'magic' price that will make me feel as though my time and work is valued?

The answer? This Photography Pricing Workbook created by Jenni Maroney of Jenni Maroney Portrait Boutique. Jenni is the business owner of her own portrait business of 15+ years. With a photography school background, and a love for numbers , she has created a fast and easy excel workbook just for you.  This workbook is completely formulated with pre-filled categories making it simple and easy to use. After plugging in your desired goals and workload, the costs you spend on products, the time you spend creating, producing, and delivering, and all of your business expenses, the workbook will provide a suggested session fee for each session type you provide (maternity, newborn, children, family, weddings, etc.), and will also give you a suggested retail price for each product that you offer your clients (prints, canvases, albums, etc.). This workbook will also provide you with a number of sessions you will need to book monthly to reach your desired yearly salary as a photographer.

Amazing right?! Trust me, I had no idea it could be so easy. I cannot stress enough the importance of valuing your time and work. As a business owner, it is a must in order to be successful.
